Allotments 4 All

We saw this 'bellflower' in a garden in the Dordogne in France last week.  I've never seen it before, and the owners didn't know its name.  I've searched under Datura, but not found it.  Does anyone recognise it?  It was quite beautiful.

It looks like Campanula cespitosa. To give it its latin name. I have them coming up in my garden although I have never planted them.

I wouldn't mind that popping up instead of the mare's tail!  It's lovely.

I have white ones and purple. They seem to stand up straighter than the other wild campanula

Not quite convinced, Shirlton, as I can find no images like this under that name, and the leaves are completely unlike a campanula.  ??????? Leaves of Daturas are more similar, but again I haven't been able to find a flower quite like this one. And the flowers are somehow straighter than either campanula or Datura.

Yep..it is Campanula..I used to have something like it myself..I'll have a look at the species or the variety name..I just cannot remember it at the moment.
I bought mine yeeeears ago from Geoff Hamilton gardens shop.

Campanula takesimana 'Elizabeth' is very similar...as is Campanula punctata 'Rubriflora'..I bet there is many other hybrids crossed but without actually getting to look closely its is very difficult tell exact what is in your picture.

Somebody who I was chatting with mentioned your post and suggested... "Campanula rapunculoides"

I love campanula, another to add to the list. It is beautiful.

Goodlife, thank you, both of the campanula you came up with look similar, definitely, although the colours are darker.  But the flower shape is exactly the same.
Campanula rapunculoides however is the usual blue colour and not similar.
