Allotments 4 All

Put my onion sets in about 10 days ago, since then we've had a covering of snow and a few frosty mornings. Onions don't appear to have grown, will it have killed them?

I can't imagine that it would kill them although might slow them down is it worth giving them a covering of mulch and some fleece?

I would not do anything, you can plant onion sets in the autumn and they will stand all the snow and frosts with no damage . Mine are just showing above the ground but I will leave them as they are if you start protecting them you can make them soft and liable to damage. My autumn planted ones are looking very good at the moment as the winter has not been so severe as last year.

They can take cold and snow and they take a few weeks to start anyway so just leave them and they will grow..
