For seed sowing this year instead of buying bags of compost I've used sieved soil from one of my beds, with some sand. For potting on I thought perhaps some blood, fish and bone added to this might be beneficial. Question is, does anybody have any idea how much to use? It says on the box that 2oz/yd² is sufficient but I'd like to convert that to oz (or ml) per bucketful. Any suggestions, without straying too far from basics, would be greatly appreciated.

When I make my own 'potting compost' I add about quarter of handfull..hmm..say tablespoon or so of BFB into bucket full of other mixed incredients. But it all depends too for what I'm going to use the compost for as some plants are more 'hungrier' than others...and don't forget a 'touch' of lime that help some plants take up the nutrients. Brassicas will do better with 'compost' that has some lime.

Let me give you a " nerdy"  ;) answer because I don't know the precise figures but a way I have used in the past is based on the "Chempak" potting compost base mixture!

To explain;

A box of Chempak base mix weighs  about 800(795) grammes and makes 70 litres of compost so let's say that FB&B is the same or similar to the "Chempak" base mix then you could interpolate that as approximately 11-12 grammes of fertiliser base to one litre of compost.

I use a two gallon bucket when I measure out my ingredients which is roughly 10 litres  so I tend to add 100 grammes of FB&B to a two gallon bucket of my home made compost.

It seems to work  so that's my tuppence ha'porth for what it is worth!
