I'm just back from visiting an elderly client who was, undoubtedly, the victim of a rip-off merchant and paid over a £100 cheque call-out charge 2 days ago.I would like her to stop this while I take issue with the company concerned.

It's now Friday evening - any chance that she can get this underway, possibly tomorrow? - and how, please?

Thanks,

Lishka

Our treasurer just stopped a chaque because someone (yes me) lost a cheque,he is old school and prefers to call into his branch to do anything, but it cost him £12.50 for the privilege.
Good luck and your pal is lucky to have you watching her back

I don't know the procedure, but get her account on line and just follow the instructions. It should be stopped straight away. But she will be charged for the service. A better bet would be to ask to delay the cheque  payment until the dispute is sorted.

It's been a while since I have had to do this but the following are the instructions given by my bank online. If she has used a cheque guarantee card which covers £100 then it won't be possible to stop it. Charges can range from £15 upwards !! Maybe contact the local council as well ?  Good luck

" Sometimes you may need to stop a cheque being paid. To do this you'll need to contact your local branch, then confirm your instructions in writing, giving details of any replacement cheque written.

If the cheque has been presented before today it cannot be stopped.

To stop a cheque, your branch will need to know:•The cheque number.
•The amount.
•The date it was issued.
•Who you made it payable to.
We normally make a charge for stopping a cheque. "

Thanks to all - there's enough info there to try to find the way forward and I'll get onto it ONCE I'VE HAD SOME FOOD!! Me stomach thinks me throat's been cut.

But while dinner's cooking and pre-prandial drink to hand, I'll tell you.

Lady had a new stair/chair lift fitted 3 yrs ago by a reputable(?) (Well they may be but I reckon their call-out peeps are kids on Work Experience....) She cannot access her bedroom or bathroom without this. A couple of days ago it stopped working and she's been sleeping on a sofa downstairs and using the outdoor toilet while she tried to get the suppliers to come take a look. Which they did yesterday. £100 call-out at which the 'engineer', without tools so by eye only, squatted in front of the chair and diagnosed a 'total failure' of the Power Box - and that'll be £1,000 please. The work couldn't be done until the middle of next week as earliest.

Today we found a local company who promised to come round this arvers/Mon at the latest. He diagnosed and corrected the problem within 20 mns max. - £95 in total. Recommends we contact Rogue Traders! I want that £100 chequed stopped for starters............It's WAR! PS Will supply the name of original comapany if anyone wants?

Right! Update. Cheque now stopped. (There was a contact no. on her last bank statement, I found) - one for which Weekend Sod's Law didn't apply. The excellent Justin, when he returned to base, told his boss what he'd done and what he'd discovered. The boss rang my laydee and has supplied the name of the Managing Director of...hmm....time to name&shame.. the suppliers/fitters... for her/us to write to, with his backing. Justin had highlighted other concerns re: the original shoddy fitting 3 years ago + supply of wrong gadget to manually bring the chair up/down (correct one supplied by him, free of charge) + the unprogrammed & therefore useless 2 remotes, and these are going on The List too.

It's going to be fun  ;) ;D

PS if anyone in the Midlands area needs a chairlift I know just the right company to recommend 8) - and possibly one to avoid :P

Mods have removed the name but shhhh, I can PM anyone who wants it apparently :D

End of the story. After long conversation with the Managing Director of the original company, the cheque's been written off, but, and here I really did Laugh out Loud, he told me to tell my client that "they wouldn't come out to her again".

Errrr....opportunity would be a fine thing  ;D ;D ;D

Glad that she had someone like you to look out for her Lishka  :)
