In view of long waiting lists for allotments, is it o/k for one person to hold more than one allotment ?

Yes.

Prospective allotmenteers sitting on waiting lists should pull their collective fingers out and organise themselves to demand more allotments.  It's not always possible, but in very many cases there is land available and parish councils have a legal duty to provide sufficient allotments - sufficient means enough to get everyone off the waiting list with as big an allotment as they want.  So these councils - hundreds of them up and down the country - need to be kicked into action, compulsorily hiring sites and insisting that all new development has a generous allocation for allotments.

Ideally the NSALG would take the parishes to task, but they don't, so if the hundred thousand unalloted can't be asked to organise themselves I'm not going to lose any sleep over their plight - and I'm certainly not going to lose any allotment to make room for them!

As I had 2 plots on an Allotment site that was like the Marie Celeste I would say yes.I could have had 22 plots.

It filled up with promotion of availability.......after me nagging the vicar of Dibley council.

Now days with a waiting list perhaps not..............but if the people who have 2 are long standing I would say it is fair.

I agree. People with more than one plot should not be asked to give them up unless they are clearly not maintaining/ using them.

If, on the other hand, people with multiple plots give them up, on my site they are reallocated as single plots of about 200 sq yards. I think that is OK.

I gave up one of my (2) plots when my husband died since I would have struggled to maintain them both on my own.

As previously posted we have a waiting list and the council is not allocating the vacant allotments, after going up to the lotty this morning and speaking to a couple of people there is now  talk about our allotments going for housing, our allotments which is about an acre,  are sandwiched between housing with a road service road already there or access to the allotments, can't wait for my meeting with the chap from the council, :)

Why not hold an open day = invite the council allotments officer and get people who want a plot to pin him to the floor for a plot!  Usually works!  If you have a sympathetic MP invite them too.....without the council knowing he/she is coming...then if a friendly newspaper photographer happens by the council will have a hard job saying that there is no demand for plots!  Chuck in a few smiling sweet children for a photo oportunity and the site will soon be full!

Give 'em hell Mr Smith.  It's unbelievable that Councils still see allotments as development opportunities when they should be actively creating more allotments..

Mr Smith

This is actually the plan, our new council chap is going to contact me shortly and it will be us and him on a site with other allotment holders, :)
