These are cheaper than buying lettuce plants in the spring/summer.

Not that I do, but when I saw someone picking up a tray of 12 lettuce plants for 3.49 at the garden centre, I quietly suggested they check out the living leaves in Lidl for 99p.  I didn't know that Tesco sold them.

Dead cows?  hmm there's a thought!

You should see the collosal greenhouses they grow and harvest these leaves in, they literally grow them in strips 7 metres wide and a hundred yards long, and they have a mowing machine that just goes down mowing the leaves off and vaccuming up the leaves. Its truly impressive in the scale it works on, the greenhouses just go off into the distance. Thats why they can do it so cheap.
Nothing is ever as it seems. With appropriate equations I can prove this.

How many seeds in a packet of mixed lettuce seed?

I must consider setting up a stall outside the frontdoor next spring and see if I get any customers.  8)

My thoughts exactly........ and don't get me started on the strip of 18 radish seedlings for 2.49.  Too close to mature and impossible to transplant  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I guess it's a start for some people who want to grow their own for the first time or have very limited room. As well as a few of us who simply don't get the seeds in on time...but that's got to be rare.

We stuck the 'living lettuce' in last spring, from lidl, also gave away 3/4, they worked out really well  :)

On offer at under 50p today; could be worth a go in a cold greenhouse.
