Browsing the Sarah Raven catalogue today I was thinking about planting some bulbs on my allotment in the autumn for cut flowers in the spring, but wonder whether the rabbits are likely to eat either the bulbs or the young shoots. Anybody know?

Definitely squirrels do. We don't have rabbits, but tulip and crocus bulbs get eaten unless planted deep. Tulips like deep. ;)

All the small furry mamals we get on the gardens and allotments will eat just about anything over winter to stay alive.

You can do one of two things.

Plant your bulbs in a place where these poor starving creatures can not get to them OR

Buy a packet or several of processed peas (intended for human consumption as Mushy peas)

If you are lucky, your furry friends will feast on these soaked peas and leave alone the precious plants.

Otherwise buy some poison and kill off the beggers

I planted a whole load of bulbs one year then watched the squirrells dive in to dig them up 5 mi nutes later, they must have watched me plant them!!

I know that sqirrells do but couldnt say wether or not rabbits do.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Since asking this question, I've read online that rabbits will eat tulip bulbs and others. I'm planning to fence off my leek patch, so might plant some bulbs in there.
