Allotments 4 All

Does anyone grow butter beans (lima beans)? and are they fairly easy to grow? :)

I am trying Spagna Beans from T&M this year, they are runners with big seeds rather than a true butter bean.  And the seeds were HUUUUUGE.  True butter beans don't do well this is country. 

This is based on what I've been told and spending far too much time perusing T&M's website.

I grew limas last year adn they were rather late to crop.... nice beans but they didn't get very big.... also grew GIganda and anm growing it again with a different lima bean and another white-seeded runner....

I grew true lima beans when in the UK with no problams, however you have to pick your variety well You need to get the earliest matuiring ones you can and start them well ahead of time. The  late maturers just really didn;t have enought time although I always got a few

I grew some "gigandes" (butter beans) from a seed swap last year, the wet weather last Spetember didn't help them to really ripen up. But I did get some to eat fresh, some to freeze and some for seed. In fact I just planted this years batch out  .
I think what they need is a good long hot summer  ;D
