Twoflower...nurseries like Deacon's, supply rootstock and the materials for crafting too.
Most of their apple varieties are supplied as 'crafting material..only couple of pounds per pundle.
They also do whole kits..where you get x-amount of rootstocks, your choise of craftwoods and sealing tapes& wax.
This is their site...http://www.deaconsnurseryfruits.co.uk/
I'm sure other nurseries does something similar.
Shame that all of you didn't start planning earlier on..I have pruned my trees and I don't have suitable wood left on my trees.
Could you start this thread again next autumn and I'll be able supply all sorts then..or save for later if needs to be. ;D I have forbidden myself for expanding my fruit tree stock..or it will over take my allotment. ::) 'Room' for one more plum and I'm now waiting it to arrive. ;D

I agree its a brilliant idea.
At my house i have four neighbouring apple varieties but no names for any of them that i am going to try some grafting with onto my giant eating? apple tree. But once ive "perfected" the technique I'd love to take part in a swap of material.

But have to learn to walk first :)

I love grafting and started learning last Autumn. it is so easy and I also learnt from you tube. The only things I used were a good sharp knife, alcohol rub to clean bark and florists tape to bind. The only graft I use so far is a chip bud graft as it can be done any time of year.

Here is my blog entry on my cherry results from last year. http://plantsalive.webs.com/apps/blog/categories/show/942491-graft

I would love to swap some scion material. I have some apple, golden delicious and jonogold, plum - victoria and denistons superb. Cherry stella. I want to make some cocktail trees up.

Is any one in Wakefield, West Yorkshire who wants to swap locally?

You are right..I can't find it neither ::)
I've got their paper cataloque though..and crafting wood is £1.90 per scion of one variety or £17.50 per 10  ( ::)pricier than I remembered :-X)
Rootstocks £3.25 each,5 for £16.00 , 10 for £25.00 and cheaper again more you buy.
Crafting kit; 3 rootstocks, scion woods, tape and wax £25.75

Leesa, I'd love to try your very early apple. I have an apple that stores very well, and I really like its taste as well. It's fairly acid in October, and I was still eating them last May, by which time they are sweet (and don't look very good anymore, because I just store them in my unheated kitchen). I don't know what it's called, though, because it came with the house.

Glad I didnt miss it. thank you.

In that case blackmoors or ebay are looking like the best value at the moment.

Had a good conversation with a bloke on eBay last night. He does it as a business and if you ask he has lots of different fruit tree scions. Good price and he was very helpful, just look up scion and it pots up. Bought some rootstock from him last week and they look nice and healthy.   Twoflower

I think you are referring to this chap. He does seem reasonable but I would rather do a mutual swap and hopefully get more variety than four, but still a good find.

A site in America for the home orchard society, they organise yearly scion swap fairs. great idea. at the bottom is some pictures I think it says 2010 of scion material at the fair. one of the shots has dozens of buckets each with a different apple variety!!!
