That time again,
When the screens have been down and up in temperatures.
My OH has had her screen replaced after a large crack had appeared across the bottom of it.
When she borrowed mine, she had another dink from a stone, after she came back with mine hers was ready.
Next journey was to go in hers to work and yes you guessed it another dink.
Moral of the story is do not let OH  take car to work as a dink may crack.
At a cost of £50 a go that is making money for all around and my pocket empty. >:(

Got them back now to put some tread on them

Anyone used Autoglass? I have a tiny chip from a stone which flew up this morning.  Are they worth using?

landimad

That depends how you want it done.
Auto-glass uses a pressure pump to force the resin in.
Others use the vacuum method to suck out the air then add the resin to draw it into the crack.
I find this a better method as the pressure pump may make a crack bigger than the vacuum method which does not.
All they have to do after is to add a bit of cleaner and hey presto looks as good as new.

I had a bit of rust at the top of the windscreen in the van, causing it to let water in by the rubber seal.
autoglass wanted £250 to remove and re-fit the screen !!
I got a complete screen and rubber seal for £80 |(fitted) from 'direct windscreens', Norwich !!

autoglass = insurance loaded rip-off merchants (IMHO)
You couldn't make it up!

In my experience.

If they advertise on TV then they are charging the top price.

The thing about it is, people generally believe that a well known name is the best.

So a million housewives every day day pick up a tin of beans and say.........

Just because the brand name is well known, it does not mean that brand is offering the best value for money. Or offers exactly what the consumer wants. It is simply impregnating their brand name on your subconsious as the best.

Since the company you are referring to, tells you that they have an arrangement with most insurance companies.  I suggest if you get a crack in your windscreen you contact your insurance company before you contact any supplier.  After all if your insurance declines to pay, I am certain the advertiser will have you bound in by a water tight contract to reimburse the cost at their fee, yourself.

I have contacted my insurers in the past to ask for advice (car, house and others) and found them to be very helpful.

If you are over 50 there are several organisations who will help. Same with single parents.

It pays to find out when you do not need help, who there is, whom you can ask advice from. Then when you do need it, it is there.

Your local council is a good point of contact. I found that out by accident when I was considering a home improvement, I received a leaflet from a supplier offering the improvement I was considering at a fixed price. Loads of flannel  about their service.  On contacting my council, I found that they had a list of approved suppliers. I contacted one on their suggestion and got the job done for two thirds of the price quoted as a special offer on that flyer.

Don't be afraid to contact your insurer first. They do not consider it a black mark and write it down to effect your precious no claims bonus as some fear.

I got my chips fixed by Autoglass via my insurance company and OH had his windscreen replaced by them also on insurance.  My chip repairs cost nothing and OH's cost his excess - less than the cost of a new windscreen.  On renewal no adverse effects to our premiums.

you must have 'fully comp' insurance, with protected no-claims bonus?

Yes - over 20 years of no claims (although they only count the last 12 now).  I'm touching wood madly as I type! I'm also female and over 50 (just) so it all brings the cost down. ;) ;D

A quick tip about wipers, as you are talking screens. Halfords £38, channel island garage £10 free postage. I know you can get them in the pound shop for older models, but the MoCo have changed the design so you have to use theirs at ripoff prices.

Had my chip repaired by autoglass through my insurers and it cost £10 but it didn't take so they put a new screen in for nothing  :D

Living in Belgium means we have Car Glass.  Excellent service and nothing to pay as it's covered by the insurance.

I've had screens cracked or shattered by chips of stone thrown up on the motorway and repaired at their workshop and one in the driveway from a stone thrown up by a passing tractor so the rear windscreen had to be replaced here at home.   Also two small corner windows I've had to break to get in the car (one Corsa and one Omega) when I've locked the keys inside..............   They do all the paperwork so it's no bother at all and not expensive for those two jobs.

Hi ACE

Have you got a link to them please. Could use some new wipers

landimad

Chaz,

I have used these on my vehicles and found they last longer than those with the metal arms.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/All-Aero-Flat-Windscreen-Wiper-Blades-Cars-Vans-/300453533077?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item45f46d1595

And they seem to work out cheaper in the life of the blade.

Red line, same place as landimad, make sure you get the right connectors. I just told them the make and year of car as mine were 26" and 16". Look to be good blades, time will tell.

Thanks LANDIMAD and ACE  Will definately try them
