Now that we have had a sharp frost -5c, I think that I have picked the last of my strawberries for the year. They have produced from mid June, a good four months so I cannot complain.

I spoke too soon as I was able to harvest another 6 Florian strawberries yesterday. They were in pots under some plastic which gave enough protection from the frosts.

The pots are only 20 cm but florian is quite a small plant, and they had saucers to keep the soil moist.

My florian are still flowering but the frost a few weeks ago make the fruit go rather mushy.    I might cloche up a few plants and see what happens.

I had never realised that strawberries could fruit so late in this country. I got some Florence plants from T&M which I planted out early September, expecting the first harvest next year. I didn't protect them and the birds have had some of them but I've had a few this week! Only thing is, I don't know what to do with them now- will it be next November before I get any more fruit from them?

Alpine sorts do fruit untill frost too...I had last ones couple of weeks ago..and they are  fully exposed for the weather in ground.
They are always the first and last to fruit for me ;D
