In clearing my lottie I keep coming across Caterpillars underneath the soil. I'm a real numpty. What are these and should I try to encourage them or discourage them...... are they the good or bad guys?? ???

They are roughly the length of your pinky, from the knuckle to tip... and plain looking.

Mostly bad, as they love to chew leaves!

Sounds like a vine weevil to me.  They don't last long on our plot when they're dug up with our resident robins and blackbirds  8)

Could also be Garden Chafer grubs..they look very similar and are bit larger than weevil grubs. But 'treatment' is same..more exposed..less trouble next year ;)
