HI everyone,

hope you are all well, I wonder if one or more of you lovely people could clarify something for me, A swede is a brassica, yes? but some books classify it as a root for rotation purposes. I'm thinking if it is a brassica then it would be susceptible to club root so should be planted with the other brassicas not the roots.

And before anybody says it's not the time to be planting, I know that, I'm just looking at the seeds and deciding what to buy for the spring, but obviously I need to know how much space I have in each bed.

if you get a heatwave next summer  the broccoli will bolt, but if the summer is crap and wet the swedes will rot.

You cant win in this game, sometimes you cant even break even  >:(
Nothing is ever as it seems. With appropriate equations I can prove this.

Well then looks like next summers weather is down to me then, pick broccoli then it's bound to be hot. pick swede it's going to be wet.

What would everyone prefer? ;D

Our broccoli bolted, but the turnips were great- I didn't think I liked turnip, but had been confusing it all my life with swede!

I also treat swedes as brassicas and rotate them as such. I love both swede and broccoli so would grow some of each, (if you grow tall broccoli varieties you could try and underplant with swedes to make the most of the space) but make sure you net them or the birds will strip them quick as a flash..... ::)
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Definately brassica bed for me. They have done much better for us planted in march than later sowings.
