Allotments 4 All

In the winter all my figs went black and fell of the tree. The leaves stayed on and were very healthy looking upto about a month ago, when nearly all of them fell off. I thought it was lack of water so I watered well everytime I went to the plot.
Now I have loads of new figs growing and they are growing quite quick. I know in the med they produce new crops a few times a year but do you think they will be edible this year or be ready for next year if they survive?

We were given a small tree (about 3 feet tall)  last autumn and it died. We thought.

However since we were busy with doing other things it never got dug up.

New shoots have come up from the roots.

Not a clue what to do next but we have a dead tree with new shoots.

Is it a fig?

I bought a very small fig tree that i wasn't sure even if it would survive in 3 months it's grown so much and has about 10 fruits on it.  not quite sure what i am doing with it or how to treat it.  Will plant it in the allotment next year.

Any advice greatfully received

It's recommended to plant in a hole that has been lined with 24" paving slabs and lots of rubble to restrict the roots.

Mine is in a half barrel that's approx 30" across and 20" deep.

I'm not sure if your figs will grow quickly enough in the remaining summer weather.  It's strange that all the leaves dropped off the tree though, but at least your tree isn't dead.

I started picking figs this week of my tree, which was grown from a cutting about 7 years ago.

I didn't know about restricting the roots so it was planted directly into the ground.  It is now about 15ft tall and it's difficult to pick the high-up figs so they burst open.
