My plants are all in my greenhouse and infested with whitefly and greenfly despite my efforts to control them. I'm thinking the best thing would be to put them outside and hope some ladybirds can help (not that I've seen any this year!), so wanted to check whether jalapenos, cayenne and corno di toro and a sweet pepper "Amy" will be ok outside after hardening off.

all my chili plants are outside and doing well. using the fruit off Madame Jeanette now. No pest probs apart from a mild attack of thrips on one plant
Sweet peppers did nothing for me outside

I can't really speak for your varieties, but our two surviving overwintered sweet jalapenos were infested with greenfly - come to think of it, so were our two aubergines - and so I put them all outside as soon as they could stay out overnight - out of desperation really.  However, I was so unimpressed with the lack of visible progress with them that I wondered whether it had been worth the effort of keeping them from last year and trying to remove the greenfly, but about a week ago we got a load of flowers on them, so it's wait and see!

On the ladybird front, we have had some larvae doing the biz and currently have one pupating on an aubergine plant.

BTW, we are in Leeds, which isn't really "outside" territory for these plants, so I am wondering whether to reap the benefits of the ladybirds but try to bring them back in!

Best regards,
Sue

i'm not too far south of Leeds (as the white fly flies)

My chillies showed signs of whitefly and I bought Agralan Whitefly Killer from Chase Organics.  I was surprised at how effective it was after just one spray.  Don't know if it works on greenfly as well though.  I gave my next door neighbours a couple of spare plants and he's got them growing out in the garden.  They 're about half the size of mine (in the conservatory) but they're flowering and fruiting and look quite happy.  We're down south though.

with the mild summer we are having (so far--touch wood--fingers crossed and all that) they should do well out doors, if it continues.

White fly are a darned nusiance in doors and out. Get them sprayed  (some rhubarb leaves with boiling water poured over I am told, produces a liquid which does the trick) but I just buy a commercial spray for the job.

Doh! i've got rhubarb "soup" down at my allotment and never thought about using it for this! Looked at bio controls but to pay for two different sorts woulkd cost a fortune- might as well buy the peppers!

I've successfully grown chillies and peppers outside for the last two years in Leeds so it can be done - and that was with the crap summers we've had, I've got fingers crossed for an even better year this year  ;D

Maybe we should have a Leeds meet at the end of the season to compare results!
