All plots have been affected with White Rot.

Leeks are they Tim ?

Tim you have my sympathy-but if it`s not rubbing salt in--after years of waiting it does look like I might get some decent onions this year.

Is it always garlic that is the most susceptible?

Not trying even this year.

Then Onions, then Leeks - or so it seems.

I pulled an over wintered onion yesterday and sad to find it had few roots and whitish rot and came out far too easily. Its neighbours are all right so far, clinging firmly to the ground.

My No 1 plot suffered from white rot last year.  I lost virtually all my onions, all my garlic, some leeks but my shallots survived.  I was told to cleanse the soil with Armitillox – I think I may have spelt that wrong – which I did February this year.  The picture below is of my stuttgarter giant sets which appear to be fine but my red baron sets aren't doing so well.  Only half of them took and those that didn't are loose in the soil and when you pick them they have white fungus on them.  Does that mean that the soil cleansing didn't work at all and sooner or later the rest of my onions are going to go the same way?

Assuming you followed the instructions - right mix & amount per m2 - & 2 applications - it's not guaranteed!!

i did just that - correct mixture and 2 applications in dry weather

so far, crossed fingers my garlic is ok (haven't bothered with onions), but I know a couple of plots on my site where the garlic has white rot. Real shame

Just keeping my fingers crossed for a few more weeks

Unfortunately I am the same!  My overwinter onions have mostly gone to seed and the rest seem to have succumbed to white rot!

Ah well.  I really don't know why I don't just buy a big bag of onions and be done with it!!  I planted some shallots tho in a different bed and they - touch wood - seem to be doing well - fingers crossed!

I tried Armillatox years back and I was not convinced it did any good.

And I`m sure it`s not as strong as it once was now

Oh well, if it claims my onions then what can I do !!

I have took on 2 other plots this year.  One's been cleared and has potatoes and squash on it and the other is still covered in couch grass, raspberries and brambles.  Hopefully one of these or both may be okay for growing onions etc... on.
