after all my nagging hubby to make sure he labels everything properly when growing from seed....I went and did it myself.  I now have 2 trays of (to all intents and purposes) identical seedlings.  Only one tray is leeks and the other is spring onions....ah...

any tips at this stage how to tell them apart?

the leaf of the leek is flat with a saw like edge and the onion leaf is round and smooth

I would go with the shape too.

Onion leaves are hollow. ( you can cut a bit off the top to check and it wont harm either plant)

Tiny leeks can be used as a salad vegetable and make a nice potato salad.

Recipe

Boiled potatoes

green salad onions or baby leeks

mayonaise or salad cream as preferred.

salt and pepper

Method

Boil small  washed salad potatoes in their skins

chop up the spring onions (or baby leeks) or even chives

put in a dish which has a lid to fit

add the dressing and salt and pepper.

As soon as the potatoes are cooked, peel and chop and add whilst still hot to the mix. Put on the lid and shake the contents hard.

Allow to cool and serve. It may need extra mayo or salad cream as the potatoes tend to drink in the dressing.

Note:-

A healthier dressing can be made with one half mayonaise or salad cream and one half plain natural yoghurt (any sort).
