As a new gardener I find GW very disappointing as there's not much 'how to' on it at all. Also found Alys' new programme a bit disappointing. We sky+ it and skim through most of it because alot of it really is style over substance. Love her wee dog though and loved Mr Singh dancing on his soil the other week though - him and George should get their own show lol.

Definitely a Beechgrove girl here. :)

Rab has dried out - Mary doll is older and wiser, and his son is into drugs.  Jamsie is still as bad as ever - and ... well I am sure you can guess the rest ..

Meg

I am not having that !, Rab dried out, not on ya nelly, he's at it quietly somewhere, as for the junkie son, seems like normal for round here. Oh well I guess I wont be seeing Rab thrown into the bridewell anymore, I found that one rather funny.
Ignore me I'm having a breakdown.

the good thing about Beechgrove Garden is that if it grows in Aberdeen it'll grow anywhere! Plus there's not so much about 'ponds' and all that sort of stuff that 99.9% of the population don't have.

It doesn't seem that long ago when Gardeners World was really good with Monty Don etc etc.

I think ponds are pretty common, in gardens and on allotments.  And GW went into terminal decline after the death of Geoff Hamilton.

It wasn't so long ago that everyone was slagging Monty Don off. Now they're getting nostalgic about him!

sawfish

I liked Monty but Geoff was better.

Duke Ellington

LoL Robert!! ;D

That is what nostalgia is all about. .....all the crappy things we had to contend with yesterday we remember with fondness today !
dont be fooled by the name I am a Lady!! :-*

Spud wanders off muttering something about digging up Percy Thrower and getting him to show the new crowd how stiff and unhelpfull they are.....

Ignore me I'm having a breakdown.

Used to be an avid GW fan but as far as I'm concerned thay have lost the plot...if you'll pardon the pun.

As for Monty Don he can come and give me a hand anytime he likes, he's lovely

If it's gardening information you need there is no better place than our very own Allotments 4 All.
It's a hub of information that has helped me so much.

The TV garden he used to use was over the fence from my plot. I've heard he used to wander round the site dispensing advice. A far cry from a modern GW presenter who came, opened a school garden on the site, and vanished again without showing any real interest at all.

I have just been watching Beechgrove on my i player .....breath of fresh air !  Many thanks to Duke Ellington on Allotments4all for introducing it to me . I am really looking forward to this weeks show .   Hooray !   Debbie   :D     (also... pox on the person who decided the nation prefers snooker to gardening !    :P  )
Trespassers will be composted !

I always really disliked Alan Titchmarsh. He always seems to like naff things.

sazhig

I've been watching Beechgrove on Sky thanks to reading about it here. Breath of fresh air compared to GW. I'm not a complete novice...but I'm no expert yet so like having a program that actually teaches me stuff. It definitely has the feel of the old GW from Geoff Hamilton's days.

I'm interested in the S4C show as well...when is it on?

tombrew

Perhaps the producers of gardeners world should read this thread .I agree that gardeners world is awful ,the people that produce it are not up to the job.

cacran

I tried to find Beechgrove Gardens on i player and could only get Beechgrove Poting Shed which is a radio programme. don't know what I a doing wrong.

goodlife

Watched it again last night..and no improvement...
Is it me but seems like the GW garden is just growing and getting done but not much is been actually shown about it..like last night they were showing close ups about planting this and that...and back round looks almost alien...like it has just sprung up all nice, tidy and designed..but who is doing it?
And bloody Joe with his design word...every other word...doesn't he know any other way to describe how things look?
And 'whats it'..he was planting by standing on his knees on freshly dug..'wet' soil with his 'best' jeans...wearing tight fancy shirt and then it has been raining by looking of the wet patches on his shirt ::)...doubt it was sweat ::)
Why dont they dress up accordingly?...I never see anybody dressing up like that for gardening..like they do in telly...are the bonkers?

Can some one please explain how to get Beechgrove on sky.  Have gone into program search and its not listed.  Tried to put in 999, nothing. I wish they would list these programmes under gardening it would make things so much easier.  Thanks in advance,Taurus.

I know it's a very different format to GW and Beechgrove, but I LOVE Landscape Man on Channel 4. I spent years watching Grand Designs, wondering whether anyone would ever think to commission a serious series about proper, long-term-investment garden design, and now it's here!
