I put some asparagus crown in about a month ago and some very thin, spindly spears have shot up about 6".

Considering that this is the first year (and I was told not to harvest until year 2) what do I do with them please?

Thanks
Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

leave them this year, when they get old and brown in autumn cut the down. It'll probably be three years before you get a proper crop.

Sorry, did you mean I cut them in Autumn? Do I cut above soil level?

Thanks

Yes..next couple of years you let your spears to grow tall plants and when autumn comes and they start to go brown..then cut them down just above soil level.. ;)

Once they have died back in autumn cut them back to about 2cm. (that allows you to know where they are if you are weeding or whatever). You may also have to stake them in a bit, as they grow quite tall and can get rocked in the wind. Sawfish is right. You shouldn't really crop until the third year after planting.
