Chitting - getting a bit late?

First the preamble - Me and my wife took over a plot at the end of December and have worked like billy-oh to get it cleared, dug and ready for planting.  I'm glad to say, thanks to all the useful information I have gleaned from this site and all your collected wisdom we are just about ready! Our thanks to all the Allotments 4All forumites.

Now a question:

It seems, having read all (well lot’s) of the spud chitting posts, that you all started chitting yours weeks ago. My first and second earlies have just been delivered. Is it getting a bit late in the day for the first ealiers to be ready for the ground mid'ish March, or does the process not take as long as I’m imagining?

Hope you can set me straight.

Cheers,

Phin

No, I don't think it's too late - I plan on getting my seed at the W Yorks Potato Day on Saturday, and will lay them out to chit then.

All best - Gavin

No way - most of mine are still in the barn. Only the earlies are approaching 'out time'. And who wants to dig a furrow in this weather?? And the soil's just not right, anyway.

Last year, some of mine were as late as May going in - & were great.

I would have thought the fact that potato days are still being held would mean that it's not to late.

Many thanks guys! I won't get too worried yet then!

Tim  - I have no plans to dig anything in the snow, it freezing out there!

All the best

There is still plenty of time to chit your earlies...With the weather as it is it might be april before we all get them in ....I cant see anything to gain by planting tatties in cold wet soil..Cheers ..Jim
