is it worth growing just 3 asparagus crowns?  We don't really have room for any more than that, but I was seduced by the idea!

I'd think 5 was a bare minimum to get a picking for a pair... on your own possibly...  :)

It depends on how much you like them ;D

Any is better than none

Definitely worth growing 3.

Remember that the ferns are quite big and tend to flop about taking up much more space than the crowns.

we stop picking on mid-summers day. this lets the plants produce sufficient stores to providew the following years crop.

I started with 3 but now have significantly more. Asparagus is one of my real favourites. I have now trained myself not to buy any out of season so the first pickings are ambrosia from the gods.

I planted a new asparagus bed in the autumn and have moved the best of my former bed to join the newbies. I was totally horrified yesterday when I saw that they are already sprouting... so I covered them up with a cosy mulch.

I planted my new bed this time last year, 60 plants in all. When I came to trim them in early january they were all sprouting again. Haven't seen a shoot since but I did cover them prior to the snow.

I have a number of pot grown crowns available for sale - Convors Collossal and Martha Washington. PM if interested and local - collection only.

Ooooh

Vortex.  Where's local?  Asparagus is one thing I am sooo looking forward to growing!

Will they cope ok in my clay and chalky soil?

Whilst digging the path edges for our new asparagus bed, I discovered some tiny bits of mare's tail root.  Would it be a good plan to plant our asaparagus in a bath which we can get weed free, just for the first season, and then move it into the permanent bed when we've had a chance to see how weedy it is and hopefully deal with the worst ones?  I know that mare's tail is notoriously difficult, if not impossible to eradicate!
