Allotments 4 All

I'm busy sorting out where everything is going in my lotty and am stuck on where to put my cereriac?  Is it a Brassica or a root? 

Thanks to anyone who can answer this for me

Not brassica family, umbelliferae

Put it wherever celery goes. Someone will know.

Apiaceae, along with things like Parsnips, celery, carrots and hemlock  :o

it's in the Difficult Family

some of ours go under the beans, or between the pea rows.. they like lots of water so we put them in a trench  ;D

I put mine where ever I have space, I think it can go anywhere.     ;D ;D ;D

Im with bugloss on this - I class it in the "It doesnt grow on my plot" family..
Seriously - last three years - lots of green and no bottom..
Any tips... anyone...

this is actually right, you can grow it anywhere, on account of it never getting bigger than a hairy golfball.

It didn't do well for me last year, but the folks on the plot two down from me had football sized ones..... their advice was "as soon as it stops raining, water the celeriac"..... I'm going to try growing it next to the greenhouse (maybe even a couple ion the greenhouse) and put it on the same watering feeds as the tomatoes....

After several miserable years I asked how to grow them (shhh on a different forum :-X)
Anyway they are NOT a root crop as I thought.
They like a rich well manured bed.
loads of water and as they get bigger the lower leaves start to bend down keep snapping these off and give a liquid feed (I used home made comfrey)I had some smashing big fat balls so will definately be growing them this year.That is if I can get the flipping things to germinate they've been sat in a propagator for ages I had the same trouble last year so made a second sowing and yes you've guessed it they ALL came up.Lot's of my friends grew celeriac last year  ;)

I know what you mean, macmac, I've got 64 so far, it was only a sprinkle of seed  :o ;D

I got hollow golf balls.  The slugs loved them.

Well good luck to you if you can get a decent one anywhere on the plot because it is not usually a good cropper in the UK.

I have had some tennis ball sized ones but sadly, the insides were speckled and every one I know has given up trying with them.

I think the best place to grow them is in France with a French family.

I'm going for a second sowing as only about 16 came up and most of them are tiny, I gave them plenty of water last year as the year before they weren't great at all.
I'll dig in some compost and a few liquid feeds when they get going.
