Allotments 4 All

I prepared the bed for my onion sets yesterday,-and planted my spuds way underground.I have had my beds covered all winter the soil is fantastic.Anyway is it to early to put the sets in today?or will the frost have them? Think I may be eager!!!

Onion sets can go in now, in fact they should. I have had over winter ones in right through the cold spell and they have survived at least -11 C.

 ???Are you sure frost won't kill them off? I put winter onions in and they look dreadful at the moment still green but look soft

Put em in they will be fine

I was told they could go in as long as the soil is workeable which, this morning, it wasn't  :)

I got my patch last May and didn't put onions in until the middle of that month. They caught up fine and were one of my biggest successes last year - only surpassed by weeds and caterpillars  >:(.

What I'm saying is don't panic! I'll be digging a bed later this week for 100 sets. I'll also put more in the coming months.

BTW Poundland and Pound Stretcher both have different varieties of sets for £1. There's some decent bargains to be had in both stores. I have Stuttgarter, Red Baron and Snowball onions to go in along with Golden Gourmet shallots.

On a similar note, would now be an ideal time to plant Spring Onions seeds into grow bags?

Uncovered the bed for them on Saturday, the soil was brill after being raked.Went off home merrily and and Sunday got to the plot and it was blinking frozen Never mind always next weekend  ;D ;D ;D
