Looking out through my window I can see not less then three pairs of Bull Finches.   Makes me wish that I had a camera with a telephoto lens.

They are stunning.

Never seen them hunting in packs before.

Don't know the answer, but I am very envious :)

Lucky you as they are scarce, and in severe decline sadly! They do tend to travel about in small family flocks over the winter.

The birds in the garden have changed.  Saw a thrush - first for years.  Now we have goldfinches, long tailed tits and bull finches.  They say it is loss of habitat but things around here have changed very little in the past 30 years.  Perhaps fewer cows, a few more houses but not many.  Same fields, same hedges, same woods.

The worm eaters have gone there are no worms any more, even on the lawn (no BFB there).  Starlings gone.  Magpies gone, Sparrows gone, Thrushes few, robins ok.  Blackbirds ok.  Firecrest gone.  Wagtails gone.

If you haven't been putting chemicals on the lawn, it's hard to understand why the worms would have vanished. Have you got NZ flatworm?
