Allotments 4 All

Hi Folks,

Just a quickie, I am about to buy a roll of fleece to cover over carrots etc this year, and wonder what is the best method to employ it?

Is simply laying it over my 4' beds sufficient or should I build some sort of support system to raise it off the crop? I just wondered what methods you all use.

You're OK just to lay it over - but allow a good 6" slack each side to take up  the growth. And I much prefer the 'trident' pegs to the single prong 'barbed' ones which destroy the fleece. = Tim

Do not find this interferes with the foliage? I may tray you approach this year but have in the past used wire hoops to support the fleece. They are galvanised wire, about a meter long with a twist each end forming a loop about 20cm from each end. Then bent into a hoop.

Put the fleece over these and tie a piece of string over the top of each hoop from hopp to hoop to hold the fleece in place.

Depends on how exposed your bed is - if it's at all windy, the fleece flaps and sails --- and flattens the carrots?   Hoops work - I was lucky and found lengths of bendy yellow pipe just he right size; made great hoops.

I take it you can buy it from a garden centre? How much is it?

Jerry would be very interested to see picture of wire hoops, string and fleece as I use wire hoops I made but usually with netting and am about to try fleece for the first time.

Faerie 9 - We sell fleece in our allotment shop 1m for 25p it is 1.6m wide, this is probably cheaper than in most shops.
Hope this may give you some idea.

I will second Kays, they are very cheap for many things, their bamboo canes are cheap even with the cost of delivery!

mmmm, didn't realise that they sell bamboo canes.   ::)

I bought 50 x 8' canes for 25 pence each a few weeks ago from our local GC. Thought that seemed ok at the time!

Tim, don't fret, that is a very good price and matches Kays pretty well.

Far cheaper than I can get locally though!
