Allotments 4 All

As I have said before I do not have an allotment just a very large garden, the bottom half  I have turned into veg.  Where I put my raspberry's 2years ago there is a very large oak tree over hanging and the residue that comes off the tree covers my fruit.i have decided to move them. Would I be best to grow under ground veg here such as carrots and parsnips, or can you suggest something else? it is also quite a shaded area because of the tree  its not a large enough area to grow potato's

There's not much in the veg line that will tolerate a lot of shade Aggie...  :-\

also the oak roots wil lbe taking all the water!! plant some spring-flowering bulbs there!! ;)

Thanks you two I'm a bit disappointed i would like it to have been productive, not having an allotment i try to make every space count.

Aggie, could you build a raised bed over the roots?  Parsnips do tolerate shade to a certain extent and I imagine carrots would too.  There was a thread on here a couple of years ago about growing in shade, I think lettuce and rhubarb were on the list too.

Otherwise could you do container gardening above the roots and grow things acording to the square foot gardening website?

I could raise the bed here, but the reason i wanted to grow things under the ground is because of the residue that comes from the tree.
