Photograph would help if possible, please! Failing that, a description of leaves, habit of growth, height etc. would make it a littlle easier to identify. It could be Rhus typhina or Stag's horn Sumach.

Awwwwww thank you SO muchly!....... and well done!!
i bet you would be good at a criptic plant crossword!!

Rhus ( prob. typhinia) i think it is.
I looked it up in a plant encyclopedia and it sound about right.
gives two different methods for pruning thou,
'group1' -to remove misplaced or crossing shoots.
'group 7' -to cut to within 2 or 3 buds of the base.

Its 2 or 3 years old, and about 2.5m high!
My dad really wants to do the 'group 7' thing!
If it grows a lot lower and bushier he will be happy, and if it dies.............. he will be happier!!!!  Dad doesn't usually have much to say about the plants, he just trims the hedges and mows the lawn. This was a gift from my mum's niece, so she wants to keep it  and not offend anyone.  Dad has had enough! It does look strange at the front of their tiny front garden.

Do you think its is not worth 'hard pruning' and he should just dig it out??
He could move it i suppose?

Palustris

Glad to help. Pruning according to the books, is simple. Either leave it alone and it will grow into a small tree or cut it down to the ground in February/April and it will grow as a small shrubby foliage plant. Take your pick! Myself I would dig it up and plant it somewhere else, say Antarctica!

Kill it. It is a thug of a plant and can get very intrusive. It ain't even pretty.
