I posted elsewhere about my melon-growing struggle this year (again!).  The hotbed got infested with ants and I think undermined the plants resulting in the watermelon dying and the cantaloupe hanging on grimly with 2 fruits looking very sick.  When I went to water it today, the smaller fruit looked like it had a very small soft patch at the blossom end and the bigger one had a small crack in the skin.  So I thought, that's it, time to take them home before they get any worse.

Cut the smaller one open and it's wonderful! Honey-sweet and SO juicy.  I'm thrilled!  The picture is after I'd eaten one slice because if it had tasted awful, it would have gone on the compost heap without a picture.  Bigger one is in the fridge for tomorrow.

PS It's Sweetheart F1 Cantaloupe

My melon envy is well documented...well done you! ;D
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

These have been produced after many failures, believe me!  I'm now hooked.  Just need to figure out how to keep the ants away.  The watermelon was so strong and vigorous and had set so many fruit and it just keeled over overnight  :'(

As already said that's exactly what happened to mine... I was devastated..   :(

nice one Ceres! I've heard that the best ones to look out for when buying them are when they are cracked at the top. Somehow it denotes its ready to eat.
