First year growing cabbage and although my packet says harvest June to October, others say from November. Will they improve or deteriorate if left in the ground longer?

We find they will "hold" in the ground over Winter but at the first touch of Spring they split...  :-\

The past 3 years of growing Tundra - they always seem to be small.  Might change to a different variety next year. ::) ::)

I'm not a great cabbage lover but this is the one I grow for winter use.

I have no problem with them holding up through the winter, don't know about the splitting as my crop is generally eaten by spring!

Regarding size I find them just fine for me & her!!

Its one cabbage that you have to be careful where you plant as they can still be there where you want to put your spuds.

Do you put ant fertalizer ( growmore FB&B ) around the plant when putting them in.

The seeds are potted on into multipurpose compost with feed but that's it.  No other feeds once in the ground.  I have been thinking about putting down some chicken pellets fertilizer this weekend for a change though.  I have never used BF&B for anything.  Probably more so because I have never really understood it :-[

I don't think you can get good results by just using manure or fertilizer i believe you need a combination of both. If i don't have enough well rooted manure i will give the soil a top dressing of 6X or organic manure and rake it in.
Some gardeners will scatter the fertilizer (growmore, FB&B) over the plot personally i think this is a waist so what i do is when i plant out i put a circle of growmore around each plant making sure it does not touch the stalk, this way i know that the fertilizer is going to go where it is needed directly to the roots.
