While we were away my son picked one of my squash "because it had gone orange" and made some nice soup with some of it. Is there any reason for not picking them now rather than waiting for the stems to die back?Is it to do with storage?

Just because they have changed colour does not mean that they have matured or developed their full sweetness and flavour. They will not be ready till the plant has died down in late autumn. Then you can use them or store them for use during the Winter and Spring when you may not have fresh vegetables or fruit available.

Caroline,
ain't gotta clue.
lbb sent me some seeds of 'kuri' & they are fantastic. Trouble is, there's only two of us so we pick 'em when about 150mm. They seem to be able to go to 'whatever'.
I 've been advised that the variety I have will store right into next May.
Hope this helps. :-*
