hi i noticed that on my parsnips that around the neck they seemed to be earthed up by ants. and on closer inspection i noticed hundreds of small brown aphid like bugs on the whole parsnip i've taken some pics but there not very clear. also there was a patch of like a cloudy pale slime on one????

Mine have got blackfly this year - never had it before.  But everything has blackfly this year.  The ladybirds were very slow off the mark.

Root aphids... rare on Parsnips, prefer lettuce. Bad luck.  :-\

simmo116

what can i do to clear/prvent them preforably organic?

simmo116

ok so i've been doing some googling... and waht most people recomend is that i spray as for leaf aphids with a fatty acid soap or derris wich i believe is banned... ??? can any one recomend an organic reliable soap?
also as they are being farmed by the ants i need to get thm under control... i have aphids in at least two seperate beds now both on parsnips(succesional) the snips them selves seem fine'ish maybe be a litle canker wich i presume is transmited by the aphids. its not looking good first i lost all my alliums. now it seems i may lose my snips. the only thing thats doing well is the bloody mares tail!!! anyone tried eatting it? lol

This may help you some different recipies, or you can buy Savona, my preference which i have put on before is Stergene washing up liquid.
Whatever you use organicaly remember the resuts are slow.

If anyone has a problem with white fly try Stergene it does work.

Quotethey are being farmed by the ants

I keep tell people that blackfly on the broad beans etc are farmed by the ants and everyone thinks I am mad.

There will be an ant day soon and I get squashing all those flying princes and princesses before they get time to become queens.
