I always seem to plant Brassica so that, when grown, I can't walk through hem to weed without breaking off all the lower leaves. This year, by chance, I gave one row more room & can now clean the bed up without damage.

I aslo suffer from over enthusiasm, and often plant items a bit close. Sometimes it helps as they can help supress the weeds by the shade they provide once they get to a reasonabale size. Apart from being a bit on the clsoe side everything is looking great Tim, wish i could say the same for my plot....

daxzen

they look great

they are supressing the weeds themselves

i wouldn't bother with them - just tidy them up by tinkering around the edges and pulling out them weeds as they get bigger (and spindly) is the next step i say

if you do take out the lower leaves - its and early crop of reeds or a great meal for your chucks

Wish it all went the way one wishes!

A full barrow load of weeds came out of that lot so that I could show off the photo!

i always plant my brassicas too close. they seem so tiny when you plant them out and a two foot spacing looks like miles.  i usually put them about eighteen inches and they are very cramped especially brussels and psb.  i usually get white fly for my sins.  this year the fox cubs in our garden had 'thinned' out my savoys for me.  :D

The idea of growing them like that is precisely that you don't need to weed! They look fine, and they're well able to look after themselves.

thifasmom

so what spacing are they Tim?

Just checked. Trowel, instead of trowel & a half - ie 13" instead of 19". I was short of room.
But the one wider spaced row allowed me to reach across to weed.

Live and learn. Yes. I should have known better than to plant out broccoli and not cover it. The wood pigeons have scoffed it, and I have had to re-sow.  :-[

I did that with my new strawberries this year though some weeds still tried to come up through the same hole as the strawberry!
