i bought a few pots of forget me nots earlier in the year and dotted them around the garden. they are finished now and i am not sure what to do with them. i am happy to leave them if they will self seed and survive over winter. are they perennial or biannual?  do i cut off the long flowering stems? the leaves look a bit mouldy too...(very new to growing flowers) .  :)

Sarah if they're the Common Forget-me-not (Myosotis arvensis) you've got they are prolific self-seeding annuals. Either leave them to die back or if you want to tidy up then pull them up and give them a shake so that any seed disperses.
There are other varieties that are biennials and perennials.

thanks flighty, i am sure they are probably common forget me nots. i shall leave them to seed then.

Sarah if they are then they shrivel and die back fairly quickly.

Asbean there are several stories as to how this delightful plant got its name.
The one I like goes...God named all the plants when a tiny un-named one cried out 'Forget-me-not O'Lord!' God replied'That shall be your name.'

They do self seed everywhere but are so easy to pull up if you don't want too many
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

I hope you liked them, because you have them forever now - they seed like the worst weeds. I always pull mine up once there are only a few flowers left, the lower flowers have already seeded by then. I do it because I find they overlie other plants and spoil them, a bit like bluebell leaves.

How I love my Forget Me Nots.

They make the perfect contrast to the spring tulips.  The plants come out after they've set seed and make wonderful cover to keep my rose roots cool  ;)

White forget me not nice too.  Looks good with orange wallflowers.

dont think i've noticed white ones. i love forget me nots they remind me of my mum who died last year. i think thats why i bought them really.  i also bought some brunnera to plant in the shade area of my garden, they are just like forget me nots but i dont know if they are a type or a completely different plant. i am expanding my knowledge of flowers and decorative plants very slowly but surely.  i am very happy for things to self seed, i dont have a tidy garden by any means.  :)
