Allotments 4 All

Not sure if this is a problem or not.

Some of the garlic I plant a month or so ago, in pots in a cold frame, has produced about 4 to 6 long leaves. Some of these leaves are flat and see ok, others seem to be fluid filled.

Is this normal, as this is the first time I have grown garlic.

In the pictures the vertical leave is flat, the leaf drooping to the right is flat at the base and then swells and appears to be fluid filled atthe tip end. (Hope that makes sense).

Haven't a clue, Jerry but, as a matter of interest, are you going to grow them on there or plant them out? = Tim

They will be planted out, probably over the Christmas break if the ground is OK. I missed the planting window earlier as the ground was too wet, I am on good old sussex clay.

It seems the problem has gone away, the leaves of all the plants are now flat and not puffy/fluid filled and all looks normal.

I didn'trealise that I had to plant garlic in a cold frame..I planted mine straight out in November but only some of the bulbs are growing, and they are only about 1 inch high.....shall I start again in a cold frame...not that I have one yet....but I could make one from some old windows someone gave me.

I would only add diver that the problem you may have is that without roots the cloves may be heaved out of the ground by frost. Just keep an (or both if you wish) eye on them and push them back in if necessary.

am i too late to plant out garlic, under cold frame or not. I'm a bit of a novice and every book/packet tells me a different planting time! andd how can I grow strong garlic like wot they have in france, rather than the weedy stuff you buy in tesco that tastes of little

Get it in. Without knowing the variety, can't say whether it's the best time for yours.

That reminds me tim - got my garlic goodies from garlicworld and think I may have gone a bit overboard. Am already talking about converting the dandelion/daisy patch of a lawn over to spuds or something I can still hang washing on the line above it!!
