Allotments 4 All

Some of my Melons and Cukes have got pretty leggy in their root trainers. Can they be potted on more deeply, like toms or chillies, or is this a no-no?

I find that they will grow root between roots and cotyledons. 

yes i believe, at least thats what i have done with no ill effects thus far.

Mine got really leggy so I popped them in the polytunnel and now most of them have died off - anyone know what I have done wrong?  Someone said that I had let wet get too near their stems?

More likely to be the cold OB... they don't like wet stems but they positively hate being cold...  :-\

Thanks for that Sadad - I still have a couple going and an allotment neighbour is going to give me some of theirs so hopefully I will have a few this year!

I don't think you can they'll get stem rot. I always keep the stem higher then the edge of the pot.

Never had any success with melons, going to try open bottomed buckets in the greenhouse border this time. Cukes usually do ok though.

Dont plant your cucumbers into the soil plant them on it so base of the stem is above ground level
This is how i do mine so i can water arround the the edge of the the pot without the stem getting wet

I'm with davyw1, plant them above ground level, or the stem dies off.

Don't worry if they're a little leggy, they're vines.

i find at this early stage its heat thats more important keeping them warm enough mine are in the greenhouse in a fish tank with fleece over them and be fare its doing well trying totem pole this year 12-20 inch cucs mmmmmm cant wait one slice per sandwich

They're now held up with sticks  :)

I plant to plant them using mini versions of those growpot things used on grow bags which look pretty similar to Davy's arrangement
