my son year 11 has a wonderful class tutor,
she has been his tutor for 5 years,
she has helped him, inspired him, told him off, encouraged him, been his maths teacher
basicly been just about perfect,
he is devastated about leaving, and wants  to do something special for
any ideas.

passing his exams while it will please her is not the answer he wants

As an ex-teacher, I can tell you that any positive gesture is appreciated- makes up for all the media criticism!

That is such a lovely post to read. As a teacher it can sometimes feel like all you ever get are criticisms!  A copy of what you have put on this post would certainly make her day.  It is always nice to get things like book tokens, cinema tokens etc. or for a lasting tribute how about dedicating a tree?:

As a teacher myself the nicest things that have been said to me by leaving students were:

That I had helped them realise that they were being a waster and that they were worth so much more than that (wasn't the phrasing I had used, but did pretty much sum it up). This was an A level student

That they were no longer scared of Biology (A mature student that came back to college)

and...

That I didn't give up on them and that meant alot to them (from a member of my tutor group)

None of these came with presents, but these are the ones that I remember. I have been given lots of wine and chocolates.

I would encourage him to tell her how much he appreciated her support. Perhaps he could write this in a card if he would be more confident doing that.

As others have said, in education you are bombarded with criticisms from every angle. It is nice to know you do make a different for some young people.
