Does anyone know what this beautiful creature is that landed on my greenhouse today?  It was about 3-4cm long and walked very fast, hence the not great photos.  Thanks in advance.

LOL!  I've got a couple of really good books on insects and I was just being lazy.  There are sooooo many aren't there?

I don't blame you as I can never find ones that I look for either! Yes, way too many!  xx

It looks like a male wood-boring wasp. I can't find one with that colour pattern, but foreign ones arrive regularly in timber, so that doesn't rule it out.

Thanks Robert.  Eek, if I'd known it was a wasp I wouldn't have got so close!   :o

It's annoying because the photos I have aren't half as bad as they look here but since Dan changed the format for posting pics mine seem to lose definition.  I could post one on my blog (where it is possible to zoom in) if anyone cares to have a closer look.  :)

Don't worry, they're not capable of stinging!
