how big should the carrot top be before I start to thin them out, still blades of grass like at the mo, do you wait until you have a fluffly top??

Some people use the thinings as finger carrots, so perhaps leave them for a while longer.

I wait until they are about the size of my little finger and then I thin out and use as baby carrots

At least wait until you have three true leaves... thin too early and the SLUGS sneak in and destroy the nice well spaced seedlings...  :-X

Carrot root fly love the smell that is generated when you thin out your carrots so its a good idea to earth them up afterwards just like your spuds.

Remember to remove the thinnings well away too.

Growing in big tubs under fleece hopefully that will put off both the slugs and the fly, fingers crossed anyway

Fly, certainly, slugs no chance... I had some growing in an old black plastic dustbin and the bu**ers climbed in and ate the lot...  >:(

When you thin out  do it in the evenings or on an overcast day as the carrot fly are less active, I sow mine in tubs off the gound early, then sow later in the ground when the fly should have died off.   ???     ;D ;D ;D
MAY THE CORN BE WITH YOU.
