I went to the coup today and found one of my wellsummers dead. Her name was Nursey.

She did not look right yesterday and I was going to make decision as to what to do today. Too late.

I was wondering if any of you guys might know why this happened.

Her symptons were. Quite lathargic, seemed to look bigger, very quiet. I noticed some odd stools around the coup some looked like tar.

I am now going to completely strip out the hutch and disinfect it.

I have checked all the other birds and they seem fine. I will be keeping a close eye on them.

Any ideas or sources of information I can read would be greatly rcvd.

thanks

F.

here's another good site have a read,

http://www.pekinbantams.com/poultryforum/viewforum.php?f=3

hens die for many reasons, comming back into lay ( egg bound) heart attack, catching a chill, worms lice and mites drain a hen. Certain viruses can cause illness/death.

If you worm them, put apple cider vinigar in the water for a week, lice powder in the bedding and give them some cabbage leaves to eat. poultry spice is good to add to the food I give mine some codliver oil once a week.

I regularly hang cabbage  for my hens, but why/what do cabbage leaves do Teresa?

Being green's they are a great sub for grass loads of vitamins plus iron in a cabbage. their poo turns black but they love it.
Mine love lettuce but it has a lot of water in it so its limited as the poo is like water afterwards ha ha.
