I was saddened this morning when I found in my garden a sparrow hawk with a broken wing.

The bird was very active, but they cannot run as fast as a cockerel, and I caught it using a plasic compost bin.

I got it out from under the bin using gloves, and the bird surrendered immediately. Never once did it bite or scratch, it just glared at me with those beautiful eyes, full of contempt, as if to say "okay, you have me now, go ahead and kill me, see what I care! I hate Homo sapiens!".

Unfortunately, my wife had driven off for the day, and I was without transport. So I went across to neighbours, and they have taken the bird in a box to the vet to see what can be done.

Let's hope it recovers. I sent the message to the vet I would cover the cost of treatment..............................we don't have animal charites quite like the RSPCA and B in Denmark, and I suspect without offering payment, the bird would have been destroyed. >:(

Excellent news!

The bird wasn't so badly injured that it couldn't be treated, and has been taken to a specialist vetinary clinic in Odense.

Presumably, it will be released back into the wild.....................from my garden  :)

what a horrible thing to find, but great news that the wing can heal.
nice to read some good news about wildlife, and caring people, for a change :)

What a heartwarming story. I hope your efforts (and expense) are well rewarded. The bird won't show any gratitude of course but releasing it back into the wild will be a very emotional moment for you. They are magnificent creatures.

Well done!

Thanks for those replies.

What a magnificent creature indeed. I have never before held a hawk, and the interaction between us was a unique experience. I don't go in for esoteric stuff, but holding the bird, I sensed a willpower far more noble and powerful than anything I have ever previously experienced in any other creature, people included. Words fail me...... :'(
