And if you sow direct you don't need compost- not that I would, probably!

Just bringing this to the top again as I'm about to pot up. I have a feeling my seedlings are a bit leggy (manily because all the other seedlings grown in the same conditions have gone leggy) but how can you tell with onions? Is it possible to plant them deep when potting on as with other leggy seedlings, and if so how deep?

I always plant my seed in December and thin them out at the crook stage , but this year i tried something i seen on gardener world where they put 3-4 seeds in a 3" pot and just let them grow until ready to plant out then you just trans plant the whole pot into the ground as a bunch instead of singles.
I also buy sets which are available from my local hardware shop from February as a backup just in case the seed doesn't do very well.

As it is all leaf, no stem Caroline, I don't think they can get "leggy" so I wouldn't try to "bury" them...  :-\

Ok. Someof them have actually "keeled over" so I think I'll chuck those and start again and pot up the rest.
