I have just ordered garlic solent wight from Marshalls.  Can anyone tell what the latest planting time is and is it a bulb from a clove?  Also, is there anything else I should know about growing garlic?
Thanks

Quoteis it a bulb from a clove?

The whole bulb is made up of a number of cloves.

On arrival break the bulb up to split the cloves and get them in asap.

Do not waste your time with very tiny cloves just eat these, use the biggest ones!

I always plant mine in the autumn, but it's said to be OK up till March. Plant as soon as you get it and see how you go.

I understood that garlic needed at least a month in cold ground, at 10C or less, to do really well. Autumn planting gives you the best chance of achieving this, especially in the south, but February planting could be all right. It will be interesting to hear in due course how you get on.

Well if that's the case, and I hope it is, I should have bulbs as big as footballs this year. I planted them in November, they've sat and thrived through all the snow and -6 degree frosts and are 6 inches high now.

Mind you, all the bloody white fly on my PSB have sat and have most definitely thrived though -6 degree frost and snow as well  :(
Tony.

Sow it, grow it, eat it.

I know this may seem crazy but lovely other half has come up with a stunning suggestion of planting garlic in some compost and putting it in the fridge - would this work or is this just a ploy to fill my beer space??? ;D

One of the reasons that cooks never put garlic in the fridge is because the garlic thinks it is winter and start to sprout.

It is enough to put the bulb in, then that will start to get it ready to grow, no need to take up beer space, the little green shoots will start after a few days and then you can separate and bung it in compost.

Best time to refrigerate is in September/October. Only I forgot last year and am late planting.
