Tee Gee

Went down to the plots this pm for some fresh veg this is how things were;

Sprouts;

Leeks;

Japanese onions seem to be a bit behind this year but I put that down to the weather i.e. wet period followed by very cold.

The Red variety hasn't emerged yet and the garlic is about the same size as these'

The greenhouse benches are ready to take my plants for hardening off when they are ready.

OK it needs a bit of a sweep out  ::) I'll get round to that later ;D

Don't forget to use the brussels tops TeeGee!
Leave only footprints, take only photographs ....

QuoteWhat Brussels Sprouts variety is that,

To the left of the grey stick they are Maximus ( not as good as some years, lack of sun I guess!)

To the right of the peg they are 'Revenge' these are not quite as prolific as Maximus normally, and they too have lacked a bit of sunshine!

QuoteDon't forget to use the brussels tops

Never bother with them usually have enough greens with my Savoys & Tundra.

You pipped me to the post, pippy!! Oh, but the FLAVOUR, TG??

Get them before something else does.

My Leeks are mushy on the outside from the frost.

I noticed some of my leeks had split along the length... could that be with the frost? Not had that before...  :-\

flowerofshona2007

Now that is odd !!!!
I was talking up the lottie and so many peoples red onions have not come up yet !! i had a look and they have rooted but no sign of growth.

Deb P

My red onions 'Electric' are up ok.........they are a bit bigger than the 'Radar' and 'Silvermoon' planted at the same time.....odd eh?!
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Tee Gee, those sprouts look very good! Much better than anything I have seen down on our allotment plots. Where about in the country are you?

Susiebelle

Its the leeks I am envious of they look so healthy, mine and a lot on my site have succumbed to that "thrip" thingie not sure of the correct name but you find a brown line down the leek and when you take a layer off you find what looks like a brown seed! but this year its really bad.  I am harvesting leeks at the moment and having to discard so many layers I am thinking of just binning the rest its very high maintenance!

Tee Gee, sprouts,
don't you get any wind your way?
Can't see any stakes?

Tee Gee

Quotedon't you get any wind ?

Now how do I answer such a question  ::)

Seriously though ;) the answer is yes and yes I sometimes have to stake them!

But I still say its the way I plant them out that is the key.

There are those that advocate firming the ground when planting out, I don't, and because of this I think I get a better root run, thus giving them a better foundation to keep them upright during the gales.

Its only an opinion but until I come up with something better I'll stick to the ways I know gives me the best results.

mummybunny

wow Tee Gee all looks amazing

telboy

Must admit Tee Gee,
that I'd get around to staking & they're at all angles but not one plant has 'blown'!

How close are those sprouts planted apart Tee Gee, I like to put mine out at about 24 inches yours look closer but I must admit they do look good.
Richard       If it's not worth having I will have it

carolinej

All my sprouts are nibbled :(

I think I'll have to net mine next year.

Thanks to all of you for your comments!

To Richard I say ; 15" apart both ways I find this makes the plants hold themselves in place rather than having to stake them, plus I think it makes them grow taller, and taller plants gives more sprouts  ;D

As I am sure you know when the sprouts start to develop the plant/s drop their lower leaves and it is at this time I sometimes have to supprt them because then the plants are not supporting each other.

I hope that answers your question!
