"A man who planted more than 300 Christmas trees and a number of other trees on his allotment in Taunton, Somerset, has been ordered to clear it.

Clifford Rogers, 41, was told by the committee which runs the allotments the reason for having a £10 a year plot was to grow fruit and vegetables.

The environmentalist said he grew the trees to help preserve the species.

Mr Rogers said he intended to keep the allotment and would try to grow fruit and vegetables but added: "It is sad I am not being allowed to do what I want to do.

"I think about helping the planet every day I come here, because the allotment is all about nature and conservation.

"We are all obliged to do our part to save the planet, and I am growing these trees for the environment." "


No, Mr Rogers.  An allotment isn't "all about nature and conservation".  Your committee members are correct.  It's "all about" growing food.

Makes me wonder about the size of plot as they don't look small trees.

Also adds an interesting surplus? Question of sell not sell?

there's nothing particularly ecological about growing a mass of conifers like that, the wildlife value is nil. The best you can say is that they're taking a bit of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

I can see them being cleared for him in the next two weeks. ;D ;D

I planted my 'Homebase' tree at the allotment and it looked very sad but seems to be OK now. It is not as tall as me after 1 year, bought it in a pot with roots.  I think I will leave it until next year or the year after to dig up and bring home.  One tree is OK, that bloke is taking the p ..s.  Have got an artificial tree to put up, doesn't smell that the real thing though, but a lot less messy.

Flossy - I was going to say the same thing - didn't anyone noticing him planting 300 baby fir trees - I mean they don't really look like cauli's, do they??
