The November issue of Organic Gardening magazine has come through the letterbox this morning. Some of us use personal liquid waste as a compost activator, but would you consider composting the other? There is an article on the sawdust loo which sounds interesting (and with this you can compost meat/leftovers if vermin-proofed...)

Hi Multiveg, i can remember my dad said that when he was young they used "night soil" sawdust/shredded paper in the bottom of the trenches, over winter digging and made a compost heap only for flowers, but leave the compost for three years, turning every two months to get the HEAT up to KILL all the germs in the "night soil", BUT I WOULD NOT USE any compost made of "night soil"  sawdust/shredded paper that was put or dug into soil where VEG grows, the idea would put me off , but (Meat & leftovers) Meats, Bones , fish etc-- i think that would encourage rats,
Organic waste, that's "ok" on any compost heap,

hope this helps

Have got a feeling that you might be required to get permission from the council before attempting a system like that.

On the meat issue, my plot neighbour composts all his leftovers. In fact he used to have my plot and I keep digging up bones (presumably his sunday roasts from the last 30 years!). He does get rats and he says that's what the foxes are for.

My sister sent me this a while ago, but don't think I would want to go that far.   :D busy_lizzie
