Vegetable juice recipe??

Chrissie

Hi - I've just become the proud owner of a juicer (£5.99 from Asda - works great and best of all is easy to rinse out!!).

Only problem is I haven't yet produced anything in the vegetable line (fruit is easy) that's actually palatable, never mind delicious. I've experimented with white chard stalks, sweet baby turnips and courgettes with a bit of celery added (and a dash of salt) but the juice is definitely lacking something ... in fact it's disgusting. Shame because I like all the ingredients and there are masses of them.

Would appreciate any recipe ideas.

Thanks!!

Chrissie

Chrissie

Wow Jackie those sound fabulous, thank you!

I notice you include something sweet in all of them - carrots, apples etc. That may be where I was going wrong.

Can't wait to try them. Thanks again for your help  :)

Ishard

You are very welcome Chrissie :)

I add something sweet to sort of balance the taste as it seems to make the flavour more rounded if you know what I mean?

Chrissie

So sorry only just noticed you'd posted again. Yes you're right, sweetness seems to be necessary to offset the bitterness of some veg. I've been experimenting with the ingredients you suggest and they're lovely. Even just adding carrot or apple to my original disastrous combination makes a huge difference. A sprinkle of celery salt is nice too!

PurpleHeather

Is the failed drinking juice any good to use as a stock base?

Chrissie

Hi PH, yes I did use up the original lot in soup in the end. Shame to waste all that goodness.

My favourite is carrot, apple, ginger & chili. I put the chili between the something, the carrot or the apple. Take the seeds out first. It gives a real kick of an aftertaste of the ginger & chili.

Chrissie

You're right Debster, thanks.

It's nice to hear other people's personal favourites and tried-and-tested combinations too!
