Hi all.
I shall be emptying my 3 compost bins in the next few days.Ideally i would want to use most of this compost next spring as a top dressing for my flower borders, and i am wondering what points to consider overwintering the compost, do i keep it covered, does it deteriorate etc;
I have never been in this position before as usually i am taking it from the bin as and when i needed it.
I need the bins to be empty as i have got loads of new stuff to put in. Anne

In the past I have put it in a pile on the ground, covered with plastic weighted down with stones, till spring. This worked just fine.

I agree with Ina, the compost does not deteriate but rain will wash out the nutrients if it is left uncovered

Thank you Ina and Phil for your replies.I investigated my bins the other day and i was perhaps a tad optimistic and will not have the vast amount i was hoping for.It is not far off so it has been turned and hopefully will be ready for spring.Will now build another heap with what i get from the garden this autumn.
Thanks Anne
