Northener...unfortunately the choke is going back to full choke not the other way! When it slips back to full choke it stops. You have a newer model, i have to manually move my choke off full.
....

I had a look at our Ryobi strimmer at the weekend.  If the choke mechanism is the same, the lever has three positions: down for full choke, middle for half choke, and up for no choke.  As you move the choke lever, you can feel the action of some form of mechanical detent which encourages it to stay in one of the three positions.

The mechanism is unfortunately hidden within the body of the carburettor, but my guess is that it's a nylon arc with three notches, tensioned by a simple spring.  If either the spring or the plastic arc break or become detached, the choke will be free to move.

Melbourne it sounds like yours is the one I have the manual for! Mine however has tow choke positions only...something i've been finding very confusing until I realised they'd given me the same manual.
I thought maybe a spring was missing so checked out the one in the shop which is a newer version but it looks just the same and there didn't seem to be a spring/similar so as you say it may be hidden in the body of the carburettor.
I must say though that the choke mechanism must be a weak point as it's very delicate.

I am also thinking of a new strimmer , I have a Black & Decker model CLC120 12V which I have had about 6/7 years OK for light strimming but the battery needs charging more frequently. I wonder if a new battery is available or is it time to say goodbye...... ???

The battery will be available to purchase seperately but will probably cost you somewhere in the region of 80% of a new strimmer.
Not worth it in my opinion as an 18 volt lithium can be had for under £100
