First time we have seen one in the garden and I had the camera ready. It stayed until the magpies saw it and chased it away.

Old bird

Aren't they beautiful birds - Isn't it a shame that the Jays and the magpies are such pretty birds but so nasty to other birds?!

There are several families of jays in the woods where I walk and you should hear them screeching if their nests are under threat!

What a good picture.  Well done.  House sparrows can be aggressive too.  I blow the husks off the budgie seed into the front garden.  The sparrows have discovered this area.  The other day, a male blackbird was listening for worms, minding his own business, when a male sparrow flew like a bat out of hell and nearly decapitated poor blackbird who, sensibly flew away. The sparrow then landed on the porch roof as if to say.  "Get off my land!"

I remember my joy at seeing my first jay a few years ago....thought a pigeon had crossed with a magpie?  :-[.....but then there were two, then a family...now they're a common sight. Still prefer them to b. magpies tho...

A Jay (and sometimes two) visits my garden every day. It comes to the feeders and picks up all the bits dropping on the ground underneath. It also picks up the whole peanuts I throw on the lawn. Also get daily visits from one or two Magpies and up to 10 Jackdaws They also collect the food on the lawn and both have learnt to feed from the hanging metal fat/seed cake feeder either by perching on the feeder direct or hanging onto the metal pole supporting the feeder and reaching across. Others cannot be bothered with the effort so wait underneath for bits to fall onto the ground. Sometimes all three birds are together on nthe lawn and may be joined by Wood Pigeons and Collared Doves. The small ground feeding birds appear after they have left.

Great picture Eric. I love to see a jay, such a striking bird, with a lovely wing span.
