Hi

I planted three asparagus crowns earlier in the year. I think they were 2 year old ones. I have just discovered that almost exactly where each crown was planted there is one spear per crown. I know i am not to cut them but i was wandering if this is normal to only get one?

Will i then get more next year? And if they are two yrear old crowns when can i harvest??

Many Thanks

you will probably get more spears appearing this year, cut NONE of them. mulch the bed overwinter with good homemade compost, or well rotted manure. next year you can (if you wish) cut ONE spear per crown. again mulch overwinter (after cutting down dead fern in Nov/Dec). then the followiny year cut as much as you can up until mid-summers day. Patience is a Virtue, so they say! ;D ;)
You couldn't make it up!

Most of mine - also planted this year - are on one spear at the moment. A couple oave two, a few aren't yet up. I'm not worrying about the latter, since three have only emerged in the last week. Just leave them, they'll be OK.
